    about us

Aguavá New Music Studio is an artists group dedicated to the production and presentation of recently created art music, through concerts, commissions, premieres, recordings, film and television music, workshops, and music publications. The name (ah-gwah-VAH) refers to a medieval Spanish warning, that has come to mean "look out!" or "heads up!" Boasting virtuoso musicians, Aguavá specializes in presenting and recording music at the highest level, often in new and innovative contexts. See our archives for a history.

aguavá group photoAguavá was founded in 1996 by conductor Carmen Helena Téllez and composer Cary Boyce, joined by flutist Alain Barker in 2000. Aguavá has established a network of classically trained composers and performers for the presentation of new music events.

Projects have included appearances of the Aguavá New Music Studio ensemble at such venues as the International Cervantino Festival in Mexico (2004), the International Tempus Fugit Music Festival in Israel (2000), and the Aguavá tour to Mexico and Colombia (1998). Aguavá has frequently collaborated with such ensembles as eighth blackbird, the Contemporary Chamber Players of Chicago (now Contempo), and the Pocket Opera Company of New York and Chicago. We have worked closely with composers such as Ralph Shapey, Stephen Hartke, John Eaton, Shulamit Ran, and many others in the presentation of their music. Aguavá has produced and performed the soundtracks for film scores as well as television. We have been featured on such syndicated programs as Center Stage from Wolftrap and Harmonia.

When on tour, artists with Aguavá regularly offer masterclasses, lectures, and public talks in the promotion and advancement of new music. We try to feature the music of composers in the countries and regions we visit.

We are grateful to our presenters, funders, and supporting organizations for their enthusiastic collaboration with us on our projects.
